About Guillaume Cabantous: |
Guillaume Cabantous was born in 1977 and lives and works in Paris. He sculpts glass, but it is by breaking it that he gives it form. His recent work invariably uses car windscreens as a basic module, an 80 x 140 cm trapezoidal glass surface, that he folds and stacks on scaffolding-pole frames. Rough metal, aged wooden beams and broken glass: the poor quality of the materials he uses calls to mind the austere beauty of Arte Povera works, by which he is influenced and whose spirituality he embraces. But the originality of his work lies above all in the unique way he uses glass as a classic drape, because even though the movement seems spontaneous, the folding is in fact carefully studied so that it falls the right way. Suspended like a jacket on a rack, or balanced on a dance bar, Guillaume Cabantous diverts materials from their usual context and confuses us with an illusion of lightness and flexibility. guillaume.cabantous@gmail.com |
